Serbia - Hurricane - Loco Loco

Trio Hurricane will represent Serbia in the 2021 contest.
In 2020 they won Beovizija 2020 and would have represented Serbia with the song Hasta La Vista.

This year they're back with Loco Loco, written by Darko Dimitrov, Nemanja Antonić and Hurricane member Sanja Vučić.

Here's the official video

This year there was to be an all Hurricane  preselection (Beovizija) but it in the end the song was chosen internally.

The official single along with karaoke and instrumental was released on March 11

The Acoustic version was released on a single titled "2021"which also includes a coverversion of Ruslana's Wild Dances (cheekily using Ruslana's backing track)

Music Week Live

The girls got together in 2017 and have released some successful songs since then.
Their Favorito clocked over 75.000.000 youtube views.
The mainly perform and record in Serbian and English. Their 2020 single Caje is in Romani.
We know Sanja Vučić from the 2016 contest when she finished 18th in the final with Goodbye (Shelter).
Ksenija Knežević also has a little Eurovision experience, she was a backing vocalist for her dad, Knez, who finished 13th for Montenegro in 2015.

Music Week Live

A digital live album recorded at the Belgrade Music Festival (august 2021) was released on Januari 18, 2022. It features Loco Loco in a medley with Čaje Šukarije, a traditional song made famous by Esma Redzepova (ESC 2013).

The album also includes a live version of Hasta La Vista, the song intended for 2020.

Russia - Manizha - Russian Woman

Russia had an final of some sorts on March 8 and Manizha (Manizha Sangin, Мани́жа Санги́н) won the three song race with Russkaya Zhenschina (Русская Женщина, Russian woman). Also known as Рашн Wуман which is Tajik for Russian Woman.

The single version was released on March 18 (digital) It has the English title but is sung in a mix of Russian and English.

The Russian lyrics are still the same as in the National Final but the English has been adjusted. There's also a bit more English compared to the original live version. The Russian equivalent of the F-word (отвалите) is still there.

Live EP Russian Woman Show

The song is written by Ori Avni, Ori Kaplan and Manizha herself.

For promotion in Rotterdam a USB was handed out.

On September 24 a 5 track EP titled Russian Woman Show (Live) was released. The 5 track EP (digital release) includes a fab live version of the Eurovision song.

Last years entry Uno by Little Big is the most watched video of the 2020 contest on Youtube with 197.000.000 views in one year.

Ukraine - Go_A - Shum

Ukraine: Go_A, electronic folk band, continued their Eurovision adventure in 2021.

Go_A released a new "techno" song ШУМ (Shum, Noise) (Youtube) which at first was not intended for Eurovision but after many positive reactions, a lot of debate and some major melody changes it actually became the Eurovision entry for Ukraine. And it paid off.

The DJ NANA remix

A new version was made for Eurovision, which was released on March 10.

The new version differs a lot from the original single but changes had to be made because the original borrowed heavly from the tradional song (and dance)  A V Nashoho Shuma (А в нашого шума, And in our noise, clip).

The new version solves that problem so not too much drama from Ukraine this year. 

Bandmembers Taras Shevchenko and Kateryna Pavlenko are now credited with writing the song.

A radio edit of the original version was released on April 2.

And if that's not enough a new remix by DJ Nana was released on May 7.

The Obsqr remix was released on July 27.

The Suvo remix has a release date in June but I'm pretty sure it wasn't there at that time.

On September 24 another remix was released: The Billx remix is the longest one with a running time of 4 mins 24 sec.

The original song, radio edit, new version and instrumental are released through most digital stores.

2021 single ШУМ 

San Marino - Senhit & Flo Rida - Adrenalina

Adrenalina is the Sammarinese entry for Rotterdam 2021. This time it was Senhit's official Youtube channel who accidentally leaked the entry and the karaoke version for a few moments, a day before the presentation. It was later confirmed by the Eurovision.tv. (here)

The rap bit is by Flo Rida who also has songwriting credits (for the rap probably). After weeks of speculation he showed up and joined Senhit on the stage.

Question: How many people do you need to write a Eurovision entry?

The answer is 10: Chanel Tukia, Tramar Dillard (= Flo Rida), Jimmy Thörnfeldt, Joy Deb, Kenny Silverdique, Linnea Deb, Malou Linn,  Eloise Ruotsalainen, Senhit Zadik Zadik, Suzi Pancenkov and Thomas Stengaard. I assume this is a record, even in the modern songwriting conglomerate days.

Update. No it's not, Baila El Chiki-Chiki (Spain 2008) by Rodolfo Chikilicuatre needed 11.

There are two versions you can check out This is the first one and here's the second one 

Both versions have Flo Rida but the Eurovision version doesn't mention him in the heading. (see versions).

In the single the Flo Rida part is moved to earlier in the song and it has a slow break not on the Eurovision version. There's also a difference in the intro and other faux-ethno bits.

On August 27 the Steve Aoki remix is released.

Freaky!

Senhit was to represent San Marino in the Rotterdam 2020 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Freaky. That didn't happen but she's not just been Standing By. She entertained the masses with her #FreakyTripToRotterdam videos in which she covers Eurovision songs with stunning visuals created by Luca Tommassini. 

Her 2021 Eurovision was presented on March 8.

Denmark - Fyr og Flamme - Øve Os På Hinanden

Duo Fyr og Flamme won the Danish Melodi Grand Prix with the song Øve Os På Hinanden (Practice on eachother). The song is written by Laurits Emanuel, one half of the duo. The other one is Jesper Groth. The song is in Danish and will stay that way for Rotterdam. 

Øve Os På Hinanden was released as a digital single on February 10.

The version on the official album has been slightly edited (only 4 seconds cut out after the first refrain)

Øve Os På Hinanden is the third single for the duo after Menneskeforbruger (Human consumer) and Kamæleon from 2020. They call themselves "the teenage idols your parents can understand". (Teenageidoler dine forældre kan forstå) and give us an updated 80's slice of real Eurovision tunesmithery.

Poland - RAFAŁ - The Ride

Poland was represented by RAFAŁ  (Rafał Brzozowski). His song The Ride was revealed on March 12.

The song is written by Joakim Övrenius, Thomas Karlsson, Clara Rubensson and Johan Mauritzson

The song was released as a digital single with the karaoke version on March 15.

A new version was released on May 14. It took me some time to find the difference between this Radio edit and the original but it's less beats at 1:10 mins.

Same goes for the new Radio version karaoke.

The radio edit also has (some?) new vocals and other changes (see comments)

There's also a change in the publisher so that probably explains the changes.

Songwriter Clara Robensson released her own version of the song on July 16. 

I think this is the original demo.

P.E. teacher, wrestler, TV host and singer Rafał Brzozowski got his first break after appearing in the talent show Szansa Na Sukces in 2002. 

In 2011 he appeared in The Voice Of Poland but didn’t make it to the final.
In 2017 he entered the Polish NF “Krajowe Eliminacje do Konkursu Piosenki Eurowizji 2017“ with the song Sky Over Europe which finished 2nd behind Kasia Moś’s Flashlight.
He recorded five albums, including a Christmas album. 

2020 hopeful Alicja saw her Empires crumble and she wasn't asked for 2021.

Poland 2020

Albania - Anxhela Peristeri - Karma

Karma by Anxhela Peristeri is the winner of the 59th Festivali I Këngës (Fest'59) and is the song for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. The song will be performed in Albanian. I don't know if there will be a revamp but the original version is well within Eurovision limits (3 minutes).

The song is written by Kleda Bahiti (music) and Olti Curri (lyrics).

The digital single of the original version was released on January 26. But it was already  withdrawn a few day later and replaced with other Anxhela song(s) on that release date.

The new version is revealed on March 1. This was released on March 9 along with the karaoke version. (Universal, digital)

Two promos (both cd-r) have been issued, one in a gatefold cover, the other in a CD case. Both have the same tracks but some with different tags/names (tags in track-files only).

Unfortunately the cd-r's made by RTSH are easy to copy and nasty sellers have been selling home made copies on E-Bay.

Anxhela Peristeri (or just Anxhela) already participated once in the Albanian Festivali i Këngës in Albania's pre-Eurovision years. In 2001 she ended 23rd with Vetem Ty Te Kam, a duet with Alfred Meminaj. She participated in all the major music festivals in Albania since then and won the popular Kënga Magjike in 2017.

Anxhela released her debut album Anxhela Për Ju (Anxhela for you) in 2004. She also recorded songs in Greek, English and Italian.
In 2020 she released the digital singles Dashi and Lujta.

The Fest 59 album

It was released on March 12 through Universal. 

They have included the new (ESC) version of Karma instead of the original Fest'59 version.

The old Festivali's Updated

The Festivali I Këngës (FiK) has been used as the selection for the Eurovision Song Contest ever since Albania entered with Anjeza Shahini's The Image Of You in 2004. But the Festivali i Këngës already started in 1962 and is of course an acclaimed music festival in its own right.

Update: Unfortunately many of the later entries are no longer on Spotify but you can still find the historic stuff in the playlist below.

In 2016 RTSH released most old Festival i Këngës entries through digital shops (Amazon ,iTunes) and Spotify. Unfortunately the winners of 1968, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 aren't available anymore (in any version) on Spotify (at least over here) or any other digital outlet.

I updated the spotify playlist (below) with all the Albanian Festivali I Këngës winners up to 2020 still available (so you don't have to). It starts in 1962. 1964's disqualified winner is also included as well as one of the other two winners. 1970 had two winners as well.

The 1967 winner is missing and several recent Eurovision entries are no longer available.

Some old winners are in versions by the second (non winning) singer. (up to 1984 most songs were performed twice by different singers).

Still, It's a magnificent trip through Albania's amazing and sometimes grim Festival history. (Check your Wiki's). A special thanks to Thomas! ------------

Note: I know Spotify can be a bit crappy. Sometimes it plays the playlist in a mixed order, or mixes it with other songs, don't blame me. 
I just think Spotify can be a handy tool to preview some music and do some vault-digging.
And in the end it's buying music that supports your artists (or in this case, RTSH), not streaming. 

Bulgaria - VICTORIA - growing up is getting old

After a year contemplating Bulgaria planned to return to Eurovision 2020 with Victoria Georgieva (Виктория Георгиева). 
We all know what happened but it was a bummer for Victoria especially as she was doing well in the polls.
So Victoria is back for 2021 and she released a digital a 5-track EP A Little Dramatic on February 26.

VICTORIA don't like no capitalization 

This includes 5 of the potential Eurovision songs. 

A sixth track in the running, Ugly Cry, was already released earlier.

On March 10 it was announced that the song selected from the bunch is growing up is getting old. The song is written by Victoria Georgieva herself, Maya Nalani, Helena Larsson and Oliver Björkvall.

2020's digital single

Victoria Georgieva, a former X-factor contestant,  has released several reasonably succesful singles in Bulgarian and a few in English. 
She is currently still working on her first album which was originally expected around Eurovision 2020. 
Victoria is still dedicated to her work giving Bulgarian stray cats and dogs a new home, so there's that.

The Netherlands - Jeangu Macrooy - Birth Of A New Age

Jeangu Macrooy was to represent the host nation with his introspective song Grow. He'll came back in the 2021 contest. 

His song Birth Of A New Age is written by Pieter Perquin (a.k.a. Perquisite) and Jeangu Macrooy himself. The song is performed in English and Sranantongo (Surinamese).

It was revealed on March 4 and is available through all your usual digital suppliers.

Macrooy's style is described as Nu Soul but has elements of Jazz and Pop.

Belgium - Hooverphonic - The Wrong Place

Hooverphonic moved on to the 2021 contest after the 2020 edition was cancelled. However they changed the line up. Release Me vocalist Luka Cruysberghs has been thanked for her services and Alex Callier and Raymond Geerts brought back Geike Arnaert into the fold. Geike was Hooverphonic's second singer (from 1997 to 2009).

Who's yer 'phonic?
Hooverphonic started out in the Trip Hop era but later on their orchestral arrangements created a more film-score sound. They also dabbled in some psychedelica and retro-pop.
The scored 35 top 100 hits in Belgium and a few made it to other charts (5 in Italy!).
Mad About You (2000) is probably their most known song from the early era.
In 2015 they scored a #3 hit with Badaboum. Sadly not a cover of the Minouche Barelli classic but it features Émilie Satt of Madame Monsieur fame.

They have release almost 20 albums, the latest being Looking For Stars with previous (4th) singer Luka, which is their 14th top 10 album in the Belgian charts.
Looking For Stars is released on CD, LP and cassette.
